iGA Istanbul Airport Becomes the First Airport in Türkiye to Achieve Level 4 Transformation in Airport Carbon Accreditation

December 13, 2023

iGA Istanbul Airport has become the first airport in Türkiye to achieve Level 4 Transformation under the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) program of Airports Council International (ACI). This milestone underscores the airport’s strong commitment to addressing the climate crisis and its alignment with the long-term goal of achieving Net Zero by 2050.

The accreditation was officially announced by ACI on 13 December 2023, and the certificate was formally presented on 4 July 2024 during the ACI EUROPE Annual Congress and General Assembly in Istanbul.

At Level 4, airports are required not only to reduce their direct emissions but also to deliver comprehensive carbon mapping, implement stakeholder partnership plans, and develop long-term transition strategies in line with the Paris Agreement. In this context, iGA Istanbul Airport has:

  • Achieved a 21% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions since 2019-the base year,
  • Met 35% of its water needs through reclaimed water,
  • Advanced major solar energy investments to fully cover electricity demand with renewables,
  • Planted 3.4 million trees across 5,000 hectares,
  • Launched iGA Hub with İTÜ ARI Teknokent to support innovation and entrepreneurship in civil aviation.

Reaching Level 4 in just two years—progressing from Level 1—iGA Istanbul Airport has not only set a national benchmark but also strengthened its position as a global leader in sustainable aviation, demonstrating how airports can lead climate action while delivering long-term value to society.
