Saya's Voice

In addition to being the world's most significant global hub, iGA Istanbul Airport has achieved another crucial milestone in its journey to become an international art center, thanks to İGA ART. "Saya's Voice" by Betül Kotil, the finalist of the İGA ART Art Project Competition, was showcased at iGA Istanbul Airport, as part of its determination to establish itself as a center for art and culture in Türkiye. For the first time, a public space of this magnitude has been made accessible in Türkiye for the creative endeavors of young artists.

Under the leadership of Prof. Hüsamettin Koçan, following the diligent efforts of board members Prof. Gülveli KAYA, Prof. Marcus GRAF, Nazlı PEKTAŞ, Murat TABANLIOĞLU, Deniz ODABAŞ, Mehmet Ali Güveli, and the esteemed jury members, sculptors Seyhun TOPUZ and Seçkin PİRİM, along with the Turkish Design Council, all renowned figures in their respective fields, the inaugural session of the İGA ART Art Project series, has concluded with the installation of this winning piece.

In honor of the Republic's 100th Anniversary, 1,923 bells have been used in the installation. The objective is to integrate the identity of Istanbul, steeped in a diverse cultural and artistic history, with the cultural memory of Anatolia. The inaugural Art Project Competition Series attracted 221 submissions. The İGA ART Art Project Competition, featuring a TRY 1 million prize, the largest competition award ever presented in Türkiye, will serve as a remarkable example for future projects to take place in public spaces across the nation. The "Saya's Voice" installation, paying homage to the Republic's Centenary, eagerly awaits visitors beneath the Viaduct at the iGA's underground exit.

New artworks will be showcased in sixteen additional locations. As the region's foremost international hub, iGA Istanbul Airport has made significant strides in cultural and artistic endeavors through the establishment of İGA ART, which aims to build bridges between peoples and cultures. CEO Kadri Samsunlu announced their commitment to ensuring the sustainability of these contests by launching an additional 16 competitions through İGA ART in various locations. Samsunlu further elaborated that, "We welcome thousands of guests at our airport every day, and we are dedicated to making their visit a memorable experience. We are delighted to present this experience through text, photographs, and videos directly into our passengers' pockets as a gift to them through İGA ART. We continue to highlight that iGA Istanbul Airport serves as Türkiye's gateway to the world. We can now assert that iGA Istanbul Airport is also Türkiye's artistic and cultural gateway to the world. From this day forward, Saya's Voice will reach the whole world from Istanbul.

İGA ART has established its presence in the Turkish contemporary art scene. Professor Hüsamettin KOÇAN, Chairman of the İGA ART Executive Board, noted that the İGA ART Art Project Competitions were about creating opportunities for young people through its specifications, evaluation criteria, application methods, and award amounts. He emphasized that this event would hold a significant place in the history of Turkish contemporary art and serve as an example in the years to come. "The İGA ART Art Project Competition has a structure that provides opportunities for young individuals and embraces participants from diverse backgrounds. All submitted projects were evaluated by our panel of experienced art professionals in a fair and impartial manner. It is important to note that the competition was designed to prioritize the artist's presentation techniques. Out of the wide variety of projects submitted to us, our jury unanimously selected 'Saya's Voice'. Koçan mentioned that the project's connection to the Anatolian cultural memory, as well as having been created by a young artist, was a primary factor in their selection. He further added, "Another reason for selecting Saya's Voice was the harmonious integration of its aesthetic with the venue's architecture."

Artist Betül Kotil expressed her excitement, saying that, "Saya's Voice is a project I have been contemplating and looking for a suitable location for some time. It found its place thanks to iGA Istanbul Airport and İGA ART." When I discovered that I had won, I said that Saya was a representative voice for all of us. I am delighted that our guests have the opportunity to hear Saya's Voice here, today."
