FOCUS ON THE PLANET, TARGET FOR THE FUTURE

Social Investments – Social Investment Program

As an important component of our sustainability approach, our Social Investment Program aims to create benefits for disadvantaged groups through quick-impact initiatives and sustainable development projects.

Focusing primarily on local communities living in neighborhoods surrounding iGA Istanbul Airport, the program aims to support disadvantaged groups by:

  • Developing projects that generate socio-economic benefits,
  • Contributing to basic education services,
  • Providing essential assistance to households in need,
  • Supporting youth through sports, culture, and arts activities,
  • Promoting entrepreneurship for women and young people,
  • Contributing to agricultural and livestock projects,
  • Implementing transformation projects that contribute to the circular economy,
  • Supporting basic healthcare services.

To evaluate the impact of our Social Investment Program, we applied the Social Return on Investment (SROI) methodology. In 2022, we conducted social impact measurement for the program’s components, and in 2023, specifically for the Beekeeping Project. According to the results, projects implemented under the program generated a social impact equivalent to 5.61 TL for every 1 TL invested. For the Beekeeping Project, every 1 TL invested created a social benefit worth 9.25 TL for participating stakeholders.

We prioritize stakeholder collaboration in all our efforts and reflect this approach across every project we implement. Further details on these initiatives can be found in our sustainability reports and in the relevant section of our website.

Newton Flight Academy Istanbul ((2024 – Ongoing)

iGA Istanbul Airport, in collaboration with Boeing, the Science Heroes Association, and First Scandinavia, launched the Newton Flight Academy Istanbul. Located on the iGA Campus, the academy offers high school students training on mathematical calculations and navigation techniques, followed by hands-on flight planning experience in motion simulators.

Since 2024, the program has welcomed an average of 20 students per day, starting with public high schools in Arnavutköy and gradually expanding to schools across Istanbul. By providing this unique opportunity, the project not only enhances young people’s aviation skills but also inspires them to pursue scientific education.

Through this initiative, iGA directly contributes to its sustainability goals of advancing “aviation skills development” and “supporting educational services.”

Road to Victory Project (2021 – Ongoing)

As one of the world’s leading global hubs, iGA Istanbul Airport continues to make steady progress with the Road to Victory Project, launched in 2021 to honor the spirit of unity and perseverance symbolized by Türkiye’s Victory Day on August 30.

The project began in Garipçe Village, Afyon, where the Great Offensive started, with the renovation of the local school, the establishment of a modern computer lab, and the construction of a sports hall. It later expanded along the historic route of the offensive to Kınık Village School and Karacaören Primary School in Afyon’s Sinanpaşa district. In 2024, the initiative reached Fuat Pasha Secondary School in Kütahya, where a computer technology classroom and a 3,000-book library for middle school students were established.

Most recently, in Uşak’s Bozkuş Primary and Secondary Schools, iGA further strengthened educational infrastructure by upgrading computer labs and libraries, while the iGA Social Solidarity Club supported students with stationery, books, and toys.

In the coming years, the project will continue along the “Road to Victory,” reaching rural schools in Eskişehir, Bursa, Balıkesir, Manisa, and İzmir.

Women’s Hands to Children’s Hearts – Knitted Doll Project (2021 – Ongoing)

Launched in 2021 to support the socio-economic participation of women living in the neighboring villages of Istanbul Airport, this project began with training sessions on handmade doll knitting. In its second phase, in collaboration with Unifree, the dolls produced by local women started to be sold at Duty Free stores in Istanbul Airport. Today, the project continues with regular orders.

Initially involving 25 women from the villages of Akpınar, Tayakadın, Durusu, and Yeniköy, the initiative has entered its fourth year. Beyond creating additional income and economic independence, it has strengthened participants’ self-confidence and social inclusion. In recognition of its impact, the project received the Women-Friendly Brands Award in 2023.

According to a Social Return on Investment (SROI) analysis measuring the impact of our Social Investment Program, including the Knitted Doll Project, every 1 TL invested generated 5.61 TL of social value for our stakeholders.

Beekeeping Project (2022–2023)

Recognizing the vital role of bees in pollination and ecosystem sustainability, iGA implemented the “Supporting and Rehabilitating Beekeeping in Neighboring Villages of Istanbul Airport” project. Within this program, 30 participants from nearby communities received 72 hours of theoretical and 20 hours of practical training. Following the training, they were provided with essential equipment such as beehives, bee colonies, masks, and smokers to begin their production.

Carried out in collaboration with BEE’O and the Arnavutköy Public Education Center, the project aimed to:

• Mitigate the challenges faced by local beekeepers,
• Support bee populations to strengthen climate resilience,
• Encourage the development of sustainable beekeeping, while also reducing the number of stray bee swarms gathered within the airport area.

The project’s social and environmental outcomes were assessed using the SROI methodology. Findings revealed that for every 1 TL invested, the Beekeeping Project generated 9.25 TL of social value for stakeholders.

“Zero Point Project” (2022)

The Zero Point Project was designed to transform waste management into art, raising both environmental sustainability and social awareness. Supported by artist Deniz Sağdıç, the project featured:

• Waste materials such as plastics, cardboard, and cables collected from iGA’s Waste Collection and Recycling Facility are carefully transformed into portraits by the artist.
• The artworks were exhibited for three months in the International Departures area of Istanbul Airport, reaching a wide audience and promoting a culture of recycling.
• An interactive workshop was held with passengers, allowing them to take part in the creation process.
• A significant portion of the revenue from the sale of artworks was donated to the Spastic Children's Foundation of Turkey, supporting customized medical equipment and education for children with disabilities.

The project not only increased the visibility of waste materials but also elevated them into artistic value, aligning with iGA’s strategy of generating sustainable value.

“Fly to Dreams” Project (2022)

On the occasion of International Day of Persons with Disabilities (3 December), iGA Istanbul Airport partnered with the Spastic Children's Foundation of Turkey to launch the “Fly to Dreams” project, aimed at raising awareness of cerebral palsy and supporting technology-based rehabilitation.

• A dedicated experience zone was set up inside the airport, where visitors engaged with SmartPose, a scientific game that fostered empathy with children’s rehabilitation journeys.
• Through the digital platform hayallerekanatac.com, participants also designed their own airplanes, with each design contributing to donations made by iGA to support children with cerebral palsy.
• As a result, 50 children received eight rehabilitation sessions each, ensuring the project delivered tangible social benefits beyond awareness-raising.

Wings to Dreams stands out as one of the strongest examples of iGA Istanbul Airport’s accessibility vision and its philosophy of being an “Airport for All.”

“Dreams Are Moving to Digital: From Canvas to Pixels” (2022)

On World Autism Awareness Day (2 April), iGA Istanbul Airport collaborated with the Turkish Foundation for the Support and Training of the Autistic (TODEV) to launch “Dreams are Moving to Digital: From Canvas to Pixels.”

• Children with autism illustrated their dream journeys, which were then digitized and enriched with augmented reality (AR) technology, allowing their limitless imaginations to reach broad audiences online.
• In the next step, the children and their families traveled from Istanbul to Antalya using iGA’s “Yanımda” accessibility services, enjoying an unforgettable visit to The Land of Legends Theme Park.
• NFT versions of the artworks were created and sold for $1,000 each, with all proceeds donated to TODEV.
• An exhibition inside the airport terminal further allowed passengers to experience this unique journey.

Company representatives noted, “The sparkle in the eyes of the children who joined this project reminds us how meaningful our steps in accessibility truly are.” The initiative exemplifies how art, technology, accessibility, and social awareness can come together in an innovative and impactful way.

iGA Social Hackathon Project (2020)

In partnership with Turkish Airlines and Turkish Corporate Social Responsibility Association, iGA Istanbul Airport organized the iGA Social Hackathon Competition to foster social impact and encourage entrepreneurship.

Held in October 2020, the two-day event brought together participants to develop innovative project ideas under the themes of SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth and SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities. The competition not only provided a platform for creative solutions but also rewarded the winners with monetary prizes, underlining iGA’s commitment to sustainable development and social innovation.

ARTWIST – From Waste to Art (2019)

Launched by iGA Istanbul Airport, the ARTWIST Project was designed to contribute to the zero-waste goal by giving discarded materials new creative and economic value. Through upcycling, construction waste was transformed into artworks, with the proceeds directed toward social benefit initiatives.

In 2019, 100 tons of construction waste from Istanbul Airport were repurposed into 39 artworks across 34 workshops. These works were exhibited at the airport, raising awareness among thousands of passengers.

“I Give Voice”: Revenue from the auction of the main pieces was allocated to establish the “I Give Voice” sub-project in collaboration with Istanbul Technical University’s Turkish Music State Conservatory. Through this initiative, music and dance studios were equipped, and children received training from conservatory instructors, gaining rehabilitation and social inclusion opportunities through art.

In the following year, a call was launched under “Artwist—From Waste to Sculpture,” inviting university students and recent graduates to create sculptures. Ten selected works were displayed at the airport, while a special collection by artist and academic Prof. Rahmi Atalay (Eagle–Bull–Fish) was sold in an online auction, with proceeds donated to KAÇUV, TESYEV, and ENEV.

The ARTWIST Project stands as a strong example of how environmental sustainability and social responsibility can converge to deliver lasting value.

iGA Development Academy (2018)

As part of the iGA Rural Development Program, the iGA Development Academy was launched in 2018 in collaboration with the Turkish Corporate Social Responsibility Association (TKSSD) to strengthen the capacities of rural youth and farmers while enhancing their income opportunities.

Through the program, young participants received training in train-the-trainer methodology, financial literacy, communication skills, social entrepreneurship, and business planning/management. Upon completion, they were assigned to their local communities to transfer knowledge and support farmers directly.

With the support of mentors, activities such as community events and coffeehouse gatherings reached over 750 farmers and residents. By sharing their knowledge, young participants not only developed their own capacities but also contributed directly to rural development.

KOSGEB Applied Entrepreneurship Training

In collaboration with Istanbul Technical University and KOSGEB, professional trainers delivered entrepreneurship and business planning education to 60 local residents. Participants who successfully completed the program gained the opportunity to access grants and interest-free loans from KOSGEB if their business plans were approved.

This project enhanced the community’s economic participation and supported the realization of new business ideas, empowering residents to build sustainable livelihoods.

Weaving Project (2017)

Launched with a lifelong learning approach, the Weaving Project enabled 10 women from the villages of Tayakadın, Akpınar, and Durusu to receive weaving training at Nişantaşı University with the support of the Anatolian Development Agency. The aim was to provide women with vocational skills—seen as a “golden bracelet” for lifelong security—while enabling them to generate income as trainers and producers.

To sustain the program, two weaving looms were purchased and placed in the villages of Akpınar and Durusu. The project also delivered significant environmental benefits: a total of 10,168 old uniforms from iGA’s security team were shredded into threads and repurposed for fabric production. These threads were handed over to local women, who used them to weave new textiles. Ultimately, the fabrics were transformed into clothing and bags designed by artist Fırat Neziroğlu, showcasing a creative example of upcycling and circular economy.

High School Model Aircraft Training and Competition (2016–2018)

Organized for three consecutive years between 2016 and 2018, the program aimed to introduce aviation to young people, spark their interest, and enhance their knowledge of the field.

Participating in teams, high school students received training on electric motor–powered model aircraft. Following the training, they designed and built their own planes in compliance with competition rules and successfully tested them in flight. The third edition of the program was held in 2018 at Istanbul Airport as part of TEKNOFEST, with the award ceremony taking place on the festival’s main stage.

This project was internationally recognized in 2017 when it received the International Corporate Social Responsibility Excellence Award from CSR Europe.

Roma Children Engage with Education Through Art (2016)

In collaboration with the Durusu Roma Association, iGA provided photography training to 18 students aged 9 to 15 from the Roma community as part of the Hıdırellez Festival in 2016.

At the end of the training, the students were given disposable film cameras. From the photographs they captured, 43 works were selected and exhibited in May 2016 at Durusu’s main square.

The project supported children in developing their creativity and self-expression through art, while also encouraging their continued participation in education. In recognition of its impact, the initiative received the International Corporate Social Responsibility Award from JCI in 2016.

Quick Impact Projects

Supporting Primary Education Services

We improve learning environments, particularly in schools located in neighboring districts, by providing essential educational materials, setting up computer laboratories, upgrading libraries into interactive learning spaces, and donating hundreds of books. With additional support for preschool classrooms, we help strengthen early childhood education opportunities.

Disaster Preparedness Training and Emergency Stations

To enhance local communities’ preparedness for emergencies, disaster awareness training sessions were conducted, and emergency containers equipped with essential supplies were installed in villages.

Healthy Schools and Happy Students

Launched during the Covid-19 period, this project improved hygiene conditions in schools by installing sensor-activated taps and soap dispensers, providing cleaning supplies, and marking social distancing guidelines.

Istanbul Airport School Visits

Students from nearby districts and across Istanbul are invited to the airport to explore terminals, learn about different professions, and observe operational processes. Visits also include tours of the science museum and library, enriching their educational experiences.

Women’s Education and Empowerment

Through the “Learning to Read and Write” program, women from local communities received literacy training and earned their primary school diplomas. The establishment of a nursery at the Arnavutköy Public Education Center further enabled mothers to participate in training programs regularly.

With the “Taste of Yeniköy” initiative, women received training in hygiene and sanitation while also taking steps toward forming cooperatives to market their products.

Contributions to Healthcare Services

A Family Health Center constructed in Tayakadın now provides healthcare services to thousands of residents. In addition, more than 3,000 students have benefited from dental and oral health screenings, supporting early health awareness.

Nature and Environmental Education

Children and teachers participated in workshops at the Nezahat Gökyiğit Botanical Garden, gaining hands-on experience with nature. At the hobby garden established at Ağaçlı Primary School, students planted seedlings and learned how to grow vegetables and fruits.

Primary school programs also covered waste management, hygiene, and traffic safety, with students receiving soap and reflective badges as part of the training.

Art Workshops

In collaboration with Istanbul Modern in 2017, children engaged in workshops on music, graffiti, dance, and sculpture. These activities fostered creativity and teamwork, offering a joyful and inspiring learning experience.

Employee-Driven Social Responsibility Projects

Running for Good at the Istanbul Marathon

Since 2019, the iGA family has been taking part in the Istanbul Marathon, partnering each year with a different NGO to support vulnerable groups. With the spirit of “Stronger Together,” the marathon has become more than a physical solidarity event thanks to the voluntary participation of our employees; it has evolved into a powerful platform that generates meaningful social impact. By collaborating with new NGOs every year, we expand the reach of our efforts, diversify awareness campaigns, and extend support to broader communities.

ecoDrone: One Seed Ball for Every Training — in Collaboration with Ecording

Through the “ecoDrone: One Seed Ball for Every Training” initiative developed with Ecording, every training session completed by iGA Academy employees is transformed into a seed ball. These are then dispersed into challenging terrains via eco-drones. Produced by women living in rural areas, the seed balls not only foster ecological sustainability but also provide women with steady income opportunities.

Supported by employee volunteers, the project has yielded significant results: in 2022, 81,710 seed balls were planted; in 2023, the number rose to 92,453; and in 2024, more than 75,000 seed balls were released, greening 9,375 m² and contributing to climate resilience.

Social Clubs

iGA Social Clubs provide employees with opportunities to socialize beyond the workplace, develop personal interests, and strengthen solidarity. Operated entirely through voluntary participation, the clubs organize a wide variety of activities in sports, arts, culture, and hobbies. These shared experiences create stronger bonds among colleagues, contribute to personal development, and reinforce iGA’s “Value to People” approach by fostering a positive workplace culture.

Breast Cancer Awareness Activities

Every October, a series of activities are organized to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month, in collaboration with the Young Accumulation Association. Programs include awareness seminars for employees, exhibitions emphasizing the importance of early diagnosis, and opportunities for voluntary screenings.

Awareness campaigns also extend to terminal areas, where pink-themed tags, seat covers, mirrors, footprints, and accessories are displayed. This way, the message reaches not only employees but also millions of travelers, amplifying the social impact.

Turkish Red Crescent Blood Donation Campaign

Under the motto “Solidarity is in Our Blood,” blood donation campaigns are held twice a year with the voluntary participation of iGA employees, in partnership with the Turkish Red Crescent. These campaigns not only strengthen the sense of social responsibility among our workforce but also provide life-saving support to those in need. Over time, the initiative has become a permanent source of vital social benefit.

Sharing Station

Between 2019 and 2021, employees donated second-hand but fully functional household items, which were collected and distributed to families in need through Eyüp Municipality Social Support Services. This project contributed to the circular economy while directly improving the living conditions of local households, transforming employee volunteerism into tangible social value.

Plastic Cap Collection Campaign

Recycling bins placed at four points inside the terminal collected 400 kg of blue plastic caps, which were repurposed at Gültepe Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School into protective face shields for healthcare workers. In the first stage, 1,000 shields were donated to Arnavutköy State Hospital and 2,000 to Eyüp and Okmeydanı Hospitals. The project provided direct support to frontline healthcare workers during the pandemic while contributing to circular economy practices.

Be the Voice to the New Worlds

In cooperation with Boğaziçi University’s GETEM (Technology and Education Laboratory for the Visually Impaired), iGA employees volunteered as readers, recording selected books that were then made accessible to visually impaired individuals through GETEM’s technological infrastructure. Launched in 2020 with 17 volunteers, the project has since supported equal access to knowledge and cultural resources, showcasing how employee volunteerism can deliver lasting social value.
